Female airport employee brings case for a hostile work environment

Dallas, TX – All workers are protected from being placed in a situation where any reasonable person could not function and do their job properly due to mistreatment. If this kind of mistreatment is based on the person’s gender or sex, it is considered a hostile work environment under sexual harassment laws and legal action against the employer is possible. If there is a settlement or successful trial, compensation in these kinds of lawsuits can be related to lost pay, punishment for reckless conduct by an employer, or other forms of damages. There are sexual harassment attorneys in Texas who can provide more specific details.

According to the Associated Press, a sexual harassment lawsuit was brought by the federal government on behalf of a female maintenance worker at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport [1].

Coworker behavior results in harassment lawsuit

The news report states that the problem began when the woman transferred to a maintenance position at the airport. She was employed in a department where mostly male workers allegedly created a hostile work environment by constantly talking about inappropriate topics such as rape. The woman also claimed that during this time some of her male coworkers had asked her to have sex with them. She had been placed on administrative leave shortly after she filed a formal complaint with the company’s human resources department.

Based on the information they had received in complaint, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission formally brought the case against the Utah company SkyWest on the worker’s behalf. The lawsuit further alleges that in addition to the claims for a hostile work environment, the woman was also a victim of retaliation and that she eventually quit her position over these problems. The company’s own internal investigation confirmed some of the allegations she had made based on interviews with coworkers, and they had required all of their employees to receive mandatory sexual harassment training following the incidents.

The employer said that they could not comment on the news of the pending case, but that they hold all of their employees to high standards of conduct. Potential damages in the lawsuit include back pay for the woman and punitive damages for the employer’s handling of the situation.
