San Diego, CA- Congressional hopeful Carl DeMaio, who is trying it unseat a Democratic incumbent Rep. Scott Peters, alleges his opponent is trotting out accusations that he sexually harassed one of his former staffers as a political ploy and attack on his sexual orientation.

In an interview the Hill, DeMaio, an openly gay Republican vying for to take the 52nd Congressional seat, said his opponent is “actively promoting” the accusation to sully his name with just two weeks to go to the election.

“I guess you can say anything about the gay guy and some people will believe it,” DeMaio told the Hill.

DeMaio describe Peters smearing his name to reporters and “making other claims that were outrageous, despicable, disgraceful, unethical,” according to the Hill.

“I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to realize, in the last 20 days of a campaign, this is a smear,”DeMaio said.

In early October, DeMaio’s former campaign policy director, Todd Bosnich, alleged in a radio interview that was never aired, but was obtained by Politico, that when he was alone with DeMaio would make unwanted advances towards him, and touched him inappropriately.

Bosnich alleges that one occasion he was called to DeMaio’s office at campaign headquarters only to find the former city councilman masturbating.

“I saw his hand, his penis in his hand and he had a smile on his face. And as soon as I came over he was looking at me,” Bosnich said according to CNN.

Bosnich complained about DeMaio’s behavior but his complaints fell on deaf ears and he was later fired which he believes was retaliation.

When those allegation emerged, DeMaio described Bosnich was “clearly troubled” and said the accusation were a way to deflect from the damage he caused to DeMaio’s campaign.

Bosnich was fired earlier this year because he plagiarized large portions of DeMaio’s website and is the prime suspect in a break-in at DeMaio’s campaign office.

Bosnich, however, was not the first person to accuse DeMaio of masturbating in a public forum. In 2009, DeMaio was accused of masturbating in one of the public restrooms at San Diego City Hall, an accusation he pushed back on and agreed to a lie detector test. He passed that lie detector and the matter was dropped.

According to the Hill, last Friday during a candidate forum, DeMaio declined to agree to another lie detector test to prove Bosnich’s allegations are unfounded. For his part, Peters said it was “interesting” DeMaio declined the opportunity to clear his name.

In spite of the sexual harassment allegations, DeMaio is leading in the polls.

Sexual harassment shouldn’t never be tolerated and victims should speak out, but if they don’t have the strength to they can turn to a sexual harassment attorney. With their advice, a victim will have the guidance they need to end their harassment. A sexual harassment attorney knows how to build a strong case and secure a settlement that covers their emotional distress and loss of wages.
