Des Moines, IA- We really like our technology, especially our handy smart phones and the World Wide Web. And why not? Computers, cell phones, the internet, all these things give us access to untold amounts of information, allows us to stay better connected to friends and family. Cell phones and the internet for all the good they have to offer can also become tools for people to engage in bad behavior. The internet and text messages are increasingly used to sexually harass or bully others and sometimes air intimate moments of their life out of a need for revenge.

That’s what happened recently, over Labor Day weekend, when hackers managed to steal nude photos of hundreds of female celebrities–mostly actresses and supermodels—and post them on the internet for the world to see. Nude photos of actresses such as Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst and Kate Upton flooded the internet, according to the Huffington Post.

Actor Lucas Neff tweeted “Stealing someone’s naked photos is the same as tearing someone’s clothes off in public. It’s sexual assault.” Neff’s powerful words may understate the violence of sexual assault a bit, but this incident is, at the very least, sexual harassment. The women effected didn’t deserve to have their private stuff bandied about the internet, and the fact that there are enough people out their willing to look at these private moments should be alarming.

The women targeted in this incident are beautiful and famous, but this kind of thing happens to many women, most of whom aren’t famous, and by people, like boyfriends and coworkers, who have an agenda against them. Whoever was behind the leaked photos were just trying to satiate their own and other people’s prurient desires, but for many women this sort of thing happens to make their lives harder, damage their careers and hurt them emotionally.

This is commonly referred to as revenge porn and often happens between jilted lovers. But it can also happens in the workplace, to humiliate a person and destroy their careers. Not all sexual harassment is about attraction or desire– much of it is— but sometimes, harassment meant to humiliate, denigrate and make a person’s life miserable.

Regardless of the motive behind revenge porn and sexual harassment, if it is the targeting of one employee by another, a business must take steps to stop it. That means swiftly and appropriately disciplining the employee who sent the sexually graphic photos and videos.

Not doing something only allows sexual harassment to persist and perhaps escalate to worse behavior like sexual assault, it happens a lot and can be very costly to an employer. Take for example the case of Aaron’s Rents who was forced to pay a former female employee $95 million because her supervisor sexually assaulted her after she made formal complaints to the company’s management.

Sexual harassment attorneys give victims the support and strength they need to stand up to their harasser and employer, and get compensation for their emotional distress and lost wages, if any.
