Tech worker files lawsuit after being treated unfairly for reporting harassment
Houston, TX – Larger companies tend to have more issues with sexual harassment. This is because they have a diverse group of workers coming into contact with each other and customers on a regular basis, which increases the chances that there will be an incident. A larger business also stands to lose more from a harassment lawsuit, as damages are capped based on the number of workers that a company employs with the amount increasing as the number of workers grows.
International technology company Google is dealing with issues related to sexual harassment and retaliation against a male employee who reported the alleged harassment [1].
Male employee has problems after reporting female coworker
The male employee alleges that he was essentially fired for not accepting the female coworker’s advances. The woman made verbal comments to him and physically touched him at a work related dinner that members of the company attended. He also claims that he was told that if the roles were reversed, namely a male employee harassing a female coworker, that the situation would have been taken much more seriously by the company.
The man apparently had reported the same woman to human resources several times for her behavior, but the formal complaints were ignored and he was advised that he needed to be more inclusive and accepting of the behavior. He was also later terminated from his position after his department’s vice president had claimed that there were too many white males in management.
Google claims that the man in question was terminated with cause after incidents with several of his coworkers and they stand by their decision to end his employment.
Sexual harassment laws are meant to protect everyone
It is possible for a worker of any gender to bring a sexual harassment lawsuit, and the laws protect all people in a workplace regardless of the gender of the victim or the person responsible for the harassment. Workplaces even have a duty to protect their workers from unwanted harassment by non-employees such as customers, contractors, or clients who come into contact with them. If these kinds of behavior are not taken seriously or addressed by the employer, the person may have a claim for a hostile work environment especially if their ability to do their job as normal is affected.
