Tracey Elis Ross, daughter of Diana Ross and star of the hit TV show, “Black-ish” learned that while she wasn’t surprised by all the sexual harassment stories that have recently come to light, men were especially surprised. That led her to write a children’s book for men to help them better understand what constitutes as sexual misconduct. She shared her wise words earlier in the month when she filled in for Jimmy Kimmel who as at home taking care of his son who had recently undergone surgery.

The title of the book is “The Handsy Man,” and Ross definitely took a Dr. Seuss approach when writing this story. Before she divulged into her new book, she made it a point to clarify that the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal isn’t a “scandal” at all, rather, it is a “systemic problem about the abuse of power that takes place across all industries,” as pointed out in the Chicago Tribune. With cheers and applause from the crowd, Ross went into the book, leaving nothing to question.

The story begins with the following lines, “There is a guy, with ten long fingers, creepy glares, and hugs that linger. If you’re a woman, you’re not a fan. I speak, of course, of The Handsy Man.” As she gets more into the story, she adds a little more in terms of description to help men understand what again, constitutes as sexual harassment. Another page reads, “And if I am your employee, don’t rest your hand upon my knee. No, I won’t sit on your lap. I shouldn’t have to say this crap.”

The story provides other scenarios that could be considered as harassment and ends with the following, “So Handsy Man if you’re still confused whether your behavior will be excused. I’ll say it clearly, nice and slow. If she doesn’t consent-the answer is NO.”

While Ross is putting forth the effort to recognize sexual harassment as the issue that it is, perhaps it is the time that consequences be given to those who commit the act. Many cases involving harassment have already come forward, and each day another one seems to make news headlines. The fact is, while society is ready to accept that sexual misconduct is a problem in various industries, not just Hollywood, what penalties with the individuals committing these acts face aside from walking away from their careers?

That is still something society must figure out.
